Xstinguish

STOP the Argentine Ant Invasion

Xstinguish is a very effective ant bait in the form of a pale green paste which will control and even eradicate colonies of Argentine ants and some other species of ants. Eradication depends on the whole colony being treated at once.

Peter Davis and his scientific research team from the Dept of Agriculture in Western Australia originally developed Xstinguish. Landcare Research in Nelson under the guidance of Dr Richard Harris brought the recipe to New Zealand and with the help of Flybusters/Antiants started doing field trials. After 4 years of trial work Xstinguish was finally registered for use in NZ and is now available for general use.

Bait Technology Ltd now manufactures Xstinguish locally under licence to Landcare Research. A non-toxic version is also available to monitor potential sites.
 

Product Safety

The active ingredient in Xstinguish is Fipronil at a rate of 0.1g/kg and this active is also found in Frontline, which is a flea control product for cats and dogs. Xstinguish should not harm humans or animals through accidental contact or ingestion. See label.
 

Packaging

Xstinguish is currently only available in 325g cartridges, which are vacuum packed. The 325g cartridges must be dispensed through a caulking gun available from hardware shops.
 

Application

The application rate of Xstinguish is 3kg/hectare so 1 cartridge is enough to treat 1100sq m so it will treat 2 average house sections. Small amounts of bait are squeezed out at regular intervals of 2 meters onto the ground or can be put into 75mm pieces of hose or irrigation tube. Best put in shady places to help against evaporation. Baiting is only necessary outside, as it will draw all ants to it. The larger the area that is baited the more successful the baiting program will be. When small areas are baited reapplication will be necessary as required, as the bait has no residual activity. Keep other animals away from treatment area for 24 hours. No harm will come to them if they eat it but you will have to re-bait. Once the vacuum bag has been opened the bait has only a short shelf life –refrigeration will help to some degree.
